Think Playgrounds

Youth movement building playgrounds for children with recycled materials

Think Playgrounds is a volunteer group composed mainly of architects. Founded with the desire to seek simple solutions, efficiency and creativity to build playgrounds for children living in the city center of Hanoi. The initiative´s goal is to ensure every child the right to equal play in the public space. The organizers work together with residents, businesses and local authorities to take back public land and build regular playgrounds with a wide range of equipment made from recycled materials, such as tires, straw and wooden boxes.

  • 20 playgrounds implemented in 10 months of the initiative
  • Over 2,000 children benefited

Did you know?

In addition to the construction of the playground, the initiative develops a group activity called Playday, a workshop to expand the network of participants, raise people’s awareness, and, in cooperation with the media, seek assistance from the Government.

Sustainability and Replicability

The project’s success spurred ‘Think Playgrounds’ members to several more play areas, which all make use of recyclable materials. This low price playground model has been replicated in the central region of Vietnam with the enthusiasm and participation of volunteer students in Hue, Da Nang and Nha Trang. If the initiative receives more support, the organizers would like to build other free playgrounds in Hanoi’s surrounding disadvantaged areas.

Lessons learned

With creativity and teamwork it is possible to develop simple and sustainable solutions to improve the quality of life in the cities.
