Connecting economy with circularity

Description

The concept of circular economy is built in opposition to linear traditional economy: in a circular economy, production and consumption create the smallest possible amount of loss and waste, leading to environmental benefits and ensuring a sustainable development.
In Berlin, many research work, initiatives and projects engage with this concept, and set the city on the path of a Circular City.
Circular Berlin, Open Source Circular Economy Days and Natural Building Lab are 3 examples of them.

Results

– On February 2018, Circular Berlin conducted an event and identified more than 120 Berlin initiatives across diverse sectors.
– Since the first event in 2015, Open Source Circular Economy Days has gathered more than 70 cities to kickstart a global discussion about Open Source Circular Economy.
– Natural Building Lab organizes regularly events and lectures and puts into practice through the construction of circular buildings from waste materials.

Did you know?

The concept of Circular Economy is the mere reflection of how nature works:  a seed growing into a tree triggers thousands of interdependent processes. The whole ecosystem couldn’t work if these processes stayed closed in individual loops, and it’s the combination and interaction of all that ensures a sustainable environment.

Sustainability and Replicability

Circular Berlin, Open Source Circular Economy Days and Natural Building Lab are just three amongst the many options that can be deployed in a city to make a global change.

Lessons learned

Making a city circular goes through a sum of initiatives in many sectors: composting, remanufacturing, or sharing designs, all contribute to a circular thinking and ultimately the city enters a virtuous cycle.
