Bye Bye Plastic Bags

Children movement for the erradication of plastic bags in Bali

Description

Bye Bye Plastic Bags is a social initiative driven by local and international children living in Bali, between ages 11 to 17. The initiative’s mission is to ban the use, sale and production of plastics bags in the island of Bali by 2018.

Results

  • Raised more than 65 thousand signatures for an online petition set by the initiative in order to collect 1 million signatures to urge the government to create and activate a law that forbids the use of plastic bags on Bali.
  • At the end of 2014, a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Bye Bye Plastic Bags and Bali’s Governor Mr. Made Mangku Pastika through which the later pledged to take measures to make the people of Bali say NO to plastic bags by 2018.

Did you know?

In  October 2013, the children presented their project at the Global Initiatives Network conference (GIN) raising national and international awareness of plastic bags production and its environmental impact in Bali. Later, in 2014, the initiative received the YAK Award of Outstanding Achievement, the Role Foundation Award and spoke in India at the famous INK talks receiving standing ovation.

Sustainability and Replicability

The initiative has the support of government bodies and international organizations such as UNORCID (the United Nations Office for REDD+ Coordination in Indonesia). It is replicable in any city where citizens organize themselves to raise awareness and pressure the government towards a stronger commitment regarding environmental issues in the cities.

Lessons learned

Children-led initiatives can be effective building awareness around sustainable challenges. Bye Bye Plastic Bags is an example of how two girls can mobilize a whole island eradicating plastic bags.
